Basin Closure and Liner Installation

Georgia Power Company required the removal of sediment from two unlined Boiler Cleaning Waste Basins (BCWB’s) at their Plant Yates facility. Following the removal all sediments, a 60-mil HDPE liner needed to be installed prior to the plant’s scheduled boiler maintenance activity. SBX Technologies, LLC was awarded the contract based past BCWB experience, excellent safety record and the ability to meet the time-critical schedule for the work.

Process Plant Demolition

Southern Nuclear Company (a division of Southern Company) had to replace the aging wastewater treatment plants at its two Georgia-based nuclear power plants. The existing plants had been installed at the time of plant construction and were approximately 30 years old. The plants were comprised of pre-fabricated steel units that had been expanded over the years but could no longer provide reliable service for the company. O’Brien & Gere teamed with SBX to remove and replace the existing plants.

Substation Remediation and Retirement

When Georgia Power Company retires and/or sells a former substation site, SBX performs the necessary soil sampling and any subsequent demolition and remediation for the site. Many of these sites have often been out-of-service for many years and require extensive clearing to access the site while others have been recently retired. The sites can range from small sites (less than 5000 sf) to very large facilities which covering half a city block. Often the concrete equipment support pads are the only remaining evidence that a substation once existed.

SPCC Experience

SBX has completed multiple design/ build projects for various electric utilities involving Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans. Electrical substations utilize various pieces of equipment (i.e., transformers, switches, circuit breakers, etc.) that contain oil for cooling and insulation purposes. SPCC plans ensure that facilities put in place containment and other counter measures that would prevent oil spills from reaching navigable waters. The SPCC rule applies to substations with individual vessels of more than 660 gallons or an aggregate capacity of 1320 gallons.

Ash Pond Excavation + Grading and Erosion Control

Georgia Power Company (formerly Savannah Electric Power Company) contracted SBX to remove ash from their Ash Pond B. Bottom ash from the burning of coal at the plant is sluiced with water and pumped to ash holding ponds where the ash settles out and collects. As the pond fills, it eventually requires removal of the ash to another location.

In Situ Slurry Excavation

The Former Brunswick Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) represented the major challenge of removing source material from the saturated zone. Previous Removal Actions had excavated source material from the unsaturated zone down to the groundwater elevation, a depth of approximately 14-feet below ground surface (BGS). To further complicate the project, the site had a limited footprint of less than one acre and was situated less than 100 yards from the bay in Brunswick, Georgia.
