Experience

Take a look: you will see how our vast experience at SBX Technologies sets us apart.

Civil Construction and Remediation

SBX Technologies has experience with construction and remediation of properties previously used for power plants and waste management across the state of Georgia.

Plant McIntosh

SBX excavated, transported and placed approximately 130,000 cubic yards of ash material into a constructed monofill. The project includes extensive erosion controls including redesign and upgrades to the existing sedimentation and clear water ponds, storm water BMPs, access road construction and drainage upgrades. Final site activities include construction and vegetation of a temporary cell cap.

SBX is assisting the client with a field design – build approach to the numerous drainage and storm water BMP modifications without significantly affecting the construction schedule and reducing overall project costs.

Plant McDonough, Plant Bowen & Plant Yates

SBX excavated and transported approximately 20,000 cubic yards of waste from the boiler waste cleaning basins (BWCB) in active power generating plants. An innovative approach proposed by SBX was utilized to remove excess water to stabilize the waste prior to disposal at a Subtitle D landfill. SBX’s approach proved to be safe, efficient and translated into significant cost savings to the owner. The work included dewatering, excavation, stabilization, transportation and disposal of the basin waste sludge, backfill or regrading and site restoration.

Water treatment and management was an important part of the scope of work. SBX installed, maintained and monitored a water treatment system. The water was pre-treated and tested for TSS, copper, iron and oil and grease prior to discharge to the plant water treatment system.

Gulf Coast Hurricane Recovery

Following the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina, SBX was requested to assist Mississippi Power with reconstruction efforts of vital electrical service to the Gulf Coast. The work included asset recovery, clearing, and support services to the electrical power recovery efforts. SBX was retained on site for a longer period than any other outside contractor utilized by Mississippi Power for their restoration efforts and received a commendation from the utility for the quality services provided. SBX is available to respond with the necessary resources and personnel in a natural disaster situation.

Environmental and Engineering Due Diligence

SBX Technologies has provided exhaustive evaluation and assessments for engineering process as well as environmental concerns, adhering to regulatory agency standards.

Lake Lanier Islands

SBX provided engineering and environmental services as part of a due diligence phase of the transaction of the Lake Lanier Islands amusement park, hotels and golf complex.

SBX provided engineering evaluation of the existing facilities. This evaluation included an assessment of the existing mechanical systems in the hotels, structural properties of the roofing systems and sanitary sewer capacity. SBX also provided due diligence environmental engineering services that included an assessment of UST sites, presence of asbestos in the existing building structures and an environmental site assessment. The assessment included on site investigation as well as exhaustive and detailed review of available documents. A detailed report was prepared that included investigation findings, recommendations and cost estimates. The data in the report was pivotal in the final negotiations of the transaction. It should be noted that the transaction was extremely high profile and SBX successfully conducted the work within a framework of strict confidentiality.

Former Camille Textile Mill property redevelopment

SBX also provided environmental due diligence of a large commercial property transaction. The scope of work at the 60-acre site included evaluation of various environmental concerns including asbestos containing materials (ACM), four former UST excavation assessments, waste water treatment plant sludge characterization and investigation of former on site landfill facilities. The environmental evaluation was a primary concern for the potential property developers and the work was completed within the critical schedule time frame and within budget.

Site investigation and remedial action various sites

SBX has provided site investigation services at over 25 sites for major utilities, development authorities and municipalities. Work includes sampling of soil and groundwater and delineation of soil contamination. Contaminants of concern included PCBs, various fuels and RCRA metals such as lead and arsenic. Sites have included live electrical substations, properties in rural as well as heavily urbanized areas, and power generation plants. SBX also provided remedial action services that typically included the excavation, transportation and disposal of impacted soils, backfill and site restoration. Many of these sites were performed under the HSRA regulatory framework and included interaction with the appropriate regulatory agencies.

Demolition

SBX has broad experience performing various types of demolition. Demolition work includes underground structures such as concrete vaults in the Atlanta, Georgia downtown area as well as building structures in active substations.

Above-ground Oil Storage Tanks

SBX has successfully performed the demolition of 8 above-ground oil storage tanks located at various sites in the state of Georgia. The tank demolition included, inerting the tanks with nitrogen, decontamination of PCB-containing oil, dismantling the tanks using demolition torches and demolition of the concrete supports.

Awareness of Environmental and Hazardous Material Demolitions

Demolition work performed includes addressing environmental issues such as asbestos, lead-based paint, PCBs and other materials that are an environmental concern, salvage of reusable materials (e.g. steel) and existing equipment.

Phased Approach Demolition

SBX demolished the water treatment plant at Plant Vogtle which required a phased approach to enable construction of the new plant while keeping half of the existing plant online. Once the new plant is online the second half of the existing plant was demolished. Critical systems and were maintained and protected to provide continuous operation during demolition operations. In addition, SBX performed similar work at Plant Hatch. Plant Hatch is a nuclear power plant. SBX personnel is radcon trained and has experience working in nuclear facilities (commercial and DOE). The work was completed safely and ahead of schedule.

SPCC Design and Construction

EPA’s oil spill prevention program includes the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC), which helps facilities prevent a discharge of oil into navigable waters or adjoining shorelines.

SBX Technologies has extensive experience with meeting SPCC regulations.

Upgrade of over 60 active Electrical Substations

Working as a team with the design engineer and two major utility firms in Georgia and South Carolina, SBX provided design and construction services for the upgrade of over 60 active electrical substations in order to meet SPCC EPA regulations. The work included land surveys, installation of oil/water separator systems, berms, retention ponds and storm water drainage systems, clearing and grading, and road upgrades. This work was completed inside and adjacent to operating electrical equipment. All work was completed without any safety incidents or interruption of service.

MGP Waste Impacted Soils Remedial Action

2011-11-30_14-36-01_161

SBX Technologies has proven experience in excavation, remediation, and restoration post removal of waste impacted soils.  Work has been completed in both residential and non-residential areas with a focus on maintaining utility service and community relations.

Former Athens MGP Site

SBX performed “surgical” excavation of MGP waste impacted soils at the former Athens MGP site in Athens, Georgia. During the redevelopment of the site, “stringers” were identified at the time a new sewer line was to be installed. SBX, worked with the utility contractor excavating and disposing of impacted soils encountered. In addition, SBX installed bentomat liners as well as performed shotcrete work. The work was performed in a manner that did not impact the installation of utility schedule as it was a concern at the time when the impacted soils were identified.

Residential Area in Brunswick, Georgia

Impacted soils were identified in a residential area that originated from the Former Brunswick MGP site in Brunswick, Georgia. SBX excavated and loaded the soils for disposal. In addition, SBX performed site restoration, which included side walks as well as landscaping. Community relations were a critical component of the project. The work was completed to the satisfaction of all parties involved in a timely manner.

Engineering Inspection and Risk Assessment
